Eunice first met her partner Ralph after the return of soldiers from the Suez canal war. Eunice and Ralph were pen pals, as many young girls like Eunice were encouraged to write to the men on the front lines to keep up morale. Eunice remembers going to Selfridges to get her picture taken to send to Ralph and for Ralph it was love at first sight. Ralph could not read or write so dictated to his commanding officer so he could communicate with Eunice at home.
After the war ended Ralph asked if they could meet up, as Ralph’s mother, Lily, said that he had to thank the girl who’d written him such lovely letters. They went to the pictures and Ralph proposed on the first date. Eunice said that perhaps they ought to get to know each other better first! Two years later they got married, and eventually had two children and now have two grandchildren.
